Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction • Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)

Preferred specimen(s)	Nasal or nasopharyngeal swab submitted in 3 mL M4 media or VCM medium (green-cap) tube, or UTM equivalent
Alternative specimen(s)	3 mL nasopharyngeal aspirate submitted in a sterile leak-proof container
Minimum volume	0.6 mL
Collection instructions	Swabs in VCM, M4 or UTM tranport media: Use only sterile dacron or rayon swabs. Do not use calcium alginate swabs, as they may contain substances that inhibit PCR testing. Break applicator stick off near the tip to permit tightening of the cap. Nasopharyngeal aspirate: Submit in a sterile container with a leak-proof cap.
